Case Details
The patient lacks adequate bone height for placement of dental implants in the posterior region in the upper arch on the right side. Therefore, a sinus elevation (or sinus lift) via an external approach is required to allow the placement of bone graft material for the intention of generating new bone. In addition, two implants are simultaneously placed into this area instead of one to increase the functional surface area of support since this is the part of the mouth that has the weakest classification of bone (D4 soft bone). With the combination of a sinus elevation with bone graft placement and adding two implants (instead of just one), this area will be a lot more efficient in withstanding the heavier mastication forces that normally occurs in this region especially if a patient suffers from parafunctional habits (grinding, clenching, etc). In hindsight, the placement of three implants would be most desired but due to the financial budget for any patient the treatment plan will be accommodated to fit the needs accordingly.
